The Columbia Icefield glacier has retreated a lot since I was a kid. You have to do a short hike over the terminal moraine, but it's only about 10 or 15 minutes. And you are no longer allowed to wander around on the ice without a guide. It's too dangerous -- people have fallen into crevasses and died. But it is fun and interesting to look at from the many safe spots provided; or take the ice-buggy tour.
